Gov't to allow leasing out gov't-issued flats

Economic Minister and the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has said that the government will introduce a mechanism under which housing provided under government schemes can be rented out.

Speaking at a ceremony held to open an MDP party center in Hulhumale' Phase II, Fayyaz said the intention behind allowing flat rentals will not be to provide financial gain for some but rather to offer affordable housing solutions for those still in need of housing.

"Hopefully, our next government will consult with the people and decide things in a way that benefits all parties," Fayyaz said.

Currently, the leasing of Hiyaa flats from Hulhumale Phase II is not officially permitted. However, there is a widespread practice of renting them out without repercussions.

While the government is considering a system where flats can be rented out, government-issued land plots cannot be sold before a certain period of time has passed since acquiring the land.
