Speaker Nasheed and former First Lady unite for Yameen's release

Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed joined former First Lady Madam Fathmath Ibrahim on Monday in calling for the release of former president and main opposition leader Abdulla Yameen.

The unexpected collaboration took place as Madam Fathun was returning home from a campaign meeting at the campaign center of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the PPM-PNC Presidential Candidate, situated near Male' Carnival area. Madam Fathun and Yameen's residence, Nasheed's party, the Democrats' main party center, and Muizzu's campaign center are all located on the same main street, Boduthakurufaanu Magu, not too far from each other.

As Madam Fathun passed by the House of Democrats, Nasheed was present at the location, leading to an impromptu meeting between the two. The encounter sparked support from both Democrats and PPM-PNC supporters, who voiced their demand for Yameen's release. Nasheed actively participated in the call for Yameen's freedom.

President Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence for a money laundering and bribery conviction. The lower court's ruling finding him guilty has been appealed at the High Court, but the appeal hearings have not yet been concluded.
