Hussain Amr, the running mate of the Democrats' presidential candidate in the first round of the presidential election, has announced his intention to contest for Party President in the Democrats' internal elections.
The Democrats' interim council meeting today approved the proposal by the party's Parliamentary Group Leader, Ali Azim, to hold the internal elections on December 2. Following the decision, Amr took to Twitter to declare his intention to contest the party's election.
"I ask for the cooperation and support of all Democrats in this regard," Amr said.
Several other senior Democrats have also expressed their intentions to run for the position of party president.
Although the Democrats have scheduled their internal election for December 2, the Political Parties Act requires internal elections to be held within three months of a party's registration. Therefore, the Democratic election should be held before the 12th of next month. The 31 members of the Democrats' council unanimously approved the December 2 election, knowing that they would face fines if they held the election on that date.
The Democratic internal election was postponed to December to allow for preparations for a referendum on government change next month.
