Gov't allows existing flat owners who surrender flats to apply for new housing schemes

The government has made it possible for those who have received flats under previous housing schemes to be eligible for land plots and flats if they agree to give up their existing flats.

This opportunity is open to recipients of flats in Sinamale' and Male' Hiyaa, those who acquired flats in Hulhumale during the first round, and individuals who have received flats from government-owned companies.

A government official noted that some flats in certain categories have deteriorated over time, and some government-built company flats are typically small one-bedroom units. Those willing to surrender their flats can apply for units under the new scheme.

Under the government's Gedhoruveriyaa scheme, 32 18-storey towers will be constructed. These include towers for two- and three-bedroom units, with 1,400 three-bedroom units of 900 sqft and 600 two-bedroom units of 650 sqft.
