The Democrats suspend efforts to change governance system

The Democrats have suspended their efforts to change the Maldives' system of governance to a parliamentary system.

During Wednesday's Parliament session, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed announced that The Democrats have decided to allow President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to serve as President under a presidential system, thus suspending their pursuit of a parliamentary system.

Nasheed said during a meeting with Dr. Muizzu on Tuesday, he informed Dr. Muizzu about the resolution passed by the Parliament to instruct the Elections Commission to conduct a referendum on changing the government system.

"However, neither we [the Parliament] nor the Democrats who proposed it would like to continue this work [pn the resolution] at this time," Nasheed said.

Nasheed said he relayed to Dr. Muizzu that although the Democrats' efforts to change the government system are temporarily suspended, they would continue to advocate for the change. Nasheed disclosed that Dr. Muizzu hinted that work on changing the government system could be resumed later.

During the Parliament session, Nasheed called on Parliament members to ensure a smooth government transition and allow the new government to work.

Of Maldives' political leaders, Nasheed is the only leader advocating for a system change.
