Male' Mayor's responsibilities to be delegated to Deputy Mayor

The responsibilities of Male' City Mayor will be handed over to Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh.

The decision was made at Male' City Council meeting convened this afternoon, due to Male' Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu being elected the President of the Maldives in the presidential election held on September 30.

At the meeting, Dr. Muizzu said he would remain in office until he is sworn in as President. However, he recommended that his responsibilities be delegated to Deputy Mayor Nareesh as the fairest way to manage the transition, as this was legally permissible.

"I want to give ample to the transition work during the transition period. Otherwise, I may not be fully prepared when [I am sworn in and] I start work on November 17. I want to closely monitor the work of the transition committees assist them, and obtain and analyze the information from all places to make work plans," he said.

Dr. Muizzu said he wanted to devote all his time to crafting a comprehensive plan to fulfill the promises outlined in the presidential manifesto. Therefore, as he may not be able to give adequate time for his day-to-day responsibilities as Mayor, he said, acknowledging that the people of Male deserve a dedicated mayor. He then requested to delegate his responsibilities to the Deputy Mayor.

Dr. Muizzu added that the works that have not been carried out due to difficulties encountered by the council will be carried out in the coming days.

“I hope the people's elected councilors will have the opportunity to fulfill their roles,” Muizzu said.

Today's council meeting is the last meeting Dr. Muizzu will chair as Mayor, according to the City Council.
