The Maldives National Party (MNP) has said it would stand by President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu throughout his five-year term.
MNP's President, Mohamed Nazim, contested the first round of the presidential election but finished seventh, receiving only 1,900 votes. Following his defeat, his party formed a coalition with the PPM-PNC in the second round of the recent presidential election.
At MNP's Council meeting held Tuesday, Nazim said the party's decision was motivated by Dr. Muizzu's pledge to bring about reforms and ensure justice in the country.
“Therefore, the hope is that the new government will put into practice what it has promised,” Nazim said.
Nazim said as the MNP is currently working with the PPM-PNC, MNP candidates will contest elections over the next five years in consultation with the coalition and as agreed. The MNP will contest the upcoming Male' mayoral elections and the upcoming parliamentary elections in alliance with the PPM-PNC, he said.
Nazim said the MNP has achieved good political successes in the recent past as it is nearing its two-year anniversary. He said the MNP candidates will contest the elections in the future.
