MDP confirms MP Abdul Ghafoor remains a party member

The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has confirmed that Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa remains a member of the party.

The MDP's statement comes in response to a social media post on platform X by former MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz. In his post, Shifaz shared a photo allegedly showing Ghafoor signing a membership form to join the opposing People's National Congress (PNC) and questioned how many current MDP MPs would continue their affiliation with the party once President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumes office.

The photo posted by Shifaz showed Abdul Ghafoor signing the PNC membership form in the presence of fellow MP, Nolhivaram constituency's Mohamed 'Mostar' Nasheed.

When asked about the photo, MDP's Deputy Chairman Ibrahim Waheed said Ghafoor was a loyal member of the MDP. He said he was not aware that Ghafoor had left the party.

"I have seen the photo circulating on social media. I can see Ghafoor signing in the witness line on the membership form of someone signing up for the PNC," Waheed said.

Ghafoor has a reputation for being a staunch advocate for the MDP and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih within the Parliament. AVAS contacted him and MDP parliamentary group leader Mohamed Aslam for comments regarding Ghafoor's photo, but neither were reachable.
