The Parliament has proposed a budget of MVR 187 million for its operations for next year.
During the Parliament's General Committee meeting held on Monday, the members discussed the budget allocation for the upcoming year. While the current year's budget is MVR 182 million, Parliamentary Head of Administration Ahmed Faiz Mohamed said the increase in next year's proposed budget is due to the expected rise in the number of elected members following the parliamentary elections. The 20th parliament, to be elected next year, will consist of six additional members, increasing the total number of MPs from 87 to 93.
Faiz added that the parliament's budget is prepared and sent to the Finance Ministry after consultation with the General Committee. However, the budget discussed during the committee meeting had already been sent to the Finance Ministry and was drafted with the guidance of the Ministry due to time constraints and delays in the formation of the Parliament's standing committees.
