Thirty-one cases involving corruption worth MVR 72 million within FENAKA Corporation have been submitted to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), The Democrats' founder and Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef has said.
MP Hassan disclosed this information during a parliamentary session on Wednesday while debating a resolution initiated by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef calling for the expedited settlement of outstanding payments by FENAKA to small businesses and companies, conducting a management and financial audit of FENAKA and formulating a comprehensive plan to settle its debts.
Hassan said cases concerning MVR 72 million were filed with the ACC by some FENAKA employees. However, Hassan alleged that the investigation into the cases is not being conducted by the ACC, which emboldens the perpetrators to continue engaging in corrupt activities.
"The fact that the cases are not being investigated again gives the perpetrators the courage to continue to commit acts of corruption,” Hassan said.
The debate on the FENAKA issue comes as some companies that have done various works for the corporation have filed grievances with the relevant authorities for non-payment. Some companies said non-payment from FENAKA had hindered their ability to pay their employees and suppliers, pushing them toward the brink of bankruptcy.
According to some MPS, it is estimated that FENAKA Corporation owes more than MVR 2 billion to private and government entities. The opposition MPs called on FENAKA to pay the debts promptly and called for a proper investigation into the corruption committed within FENAKA and action against those involved.
