EC proposes MVR 61 mln budget for parliamentary election

MVR 61 million has been earmarked for the upcoming parliamentary election in the proposed budget for 2024.

Elections Commission's Vice-President Ismail Habeeb told AVAS on Wednesday that the amount included in the budget book is an amount proposed by the commission. He said the amount is sufficient to cover the expenses related to the parliamentary elections effectively.

In addition to this allocation, MVR 1.5 million has been set aside in next year's budget to finance by-elections for women's committees.

Currently, the Parliament consists of 87 members. However, the upcoming parliamentary elections will see a total of 93 members being elected. The parliamentary election is expected to be held in late March or early April next year. The Elections Commission is scheduled to announce the finalized date on November 5. The commission is currently addressing 65 complaints received regarding the constituencies for the upcoming election.
