Permission no longer required to re-broadcast for personal use

The Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has made amendments to the Re-Broadcasting Rules, granting permission for re-broadcasting within private households for personal use without the need for Broadcom's authorization.

Until Broadcom amended the rules on Thursday, re-broadcasting was prohibited even for private purposes without a re-broadcasting license issued by the commission.

The revised Article 5(h) states that re-broadcasting services can be provided anywhere in the Maldives only by a person with a re-broadcasting license issued by the Commission, except those re-broadcasting for personal use. Personal use was defined as using such a service in a private household.

The new amendment also includes an additional requirement for re-broadcasting license applicants. According to the newly added Article 5 (a)6, individuals seeking a license must not be broadcasting service providers or members of a cooperative society.
