Exact number of Indian military personnel in Maldives remains unconfirmed: Firzul

The exact number of Indian military personnel in the Maldives is unknown, the President-elect's Office has said.

At a press conference held Tuesday, Transitional Spokesperson Mohamed Firzul Abdullah Khaleel said it is confirmed beyond any doubt that there are Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. While the outgoing government has confirmed their presence in the Maldives, it was also mentioned in a meeting between President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Indian Ambassador in the Maldives, he said.

“However, we have not yet received the most complete information on the total number,” Firzul said.

Firzul said the efforts to obtain information on the agreements signed between Maldives and India have received cooperation only from some institutions, while others have not provided adequate information. Concerns regarding the information already obtained were noted, and work is underway to address these concerns.

"At this point, we are not in a position to make decisions regarding the disclosure of these agreements. However, steps are already being taken to address the identified issues," Firzul explained.
