The name of former President Abdulla Yameen has been announced.
After internal strifes with the leadership of the PPM-PNC coalition, President Yameen parted ways with PPM last Thursday, announcing his intention to register his own political party.
On Saturday night, the party's name, logo, and color were unveiled. The new party, Peoples' National Front (PNF), adopts a logo and color reminiscent of Yameen's previous party, Peoples' Alliance (PA).
The new party's social media accounts were also activated tonight.
Despite Yameen's central role in the party's creation, he cannot serve as the legal founder of the party as he is currently serving a sentence on a money laundering and bribery conviction. Article 6(h)(4) prohibits individuals serving a sentence from applying to form a political party.
Key figures involved in the party's establishment include former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and his relative, former cabinet minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal.
The party expects to seek approval from the Elections Commission for its formation on Sunday in order to proceed with party registration as soon as possible.
