By-Election for Male' Mayor set for January 13

The by-election for Male' Mayor has been set for January 13, 2024.

The mayoral seat became vacant when the former mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, assumed the presidency of the Maldives on November 17.

The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the window for individuals to apply to contest the mayoral position will be open from tomorrow until December 13. Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor from PPM-PNC, Saif Fathih from The Democrats, who is a current member of the City Council, former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed from the newly forming Peoples' National Front (PNF), and former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof have expressed interest in running for the mayor post.

The EC has decided to conduct the by-election for the mayor's position concurrently with three vacant Male' City councilor seats. The three councilors stepped down from their roles to assume responsibilities in the new government. Additionally, on the same day, by-elections for Rakeedhoo council membership and WDC seats for 19 islands are also scheduled to take place.
