MP Hassan Latheef elected as the Democrats' first President

The Democrats have officially announced MP Hassan Latheef as the party's first President following the conclusion of their inaugural internal election held on Saturday.

The interim results, delayed for over 24 hours since voting concluded, were announced on Sunday night by the party's Parliamentary Group leader and Henveiru Central MP Ali Azim.

The President post was contested in the election by Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef and former STO Managing Director Hussain Amr. According to the results, Hassan Latheef received 1,704 votes against 1,300 for Amr. Fifty votes were deemed invalid.

Prior to the announcement of the interim results, both Hassan Latheef and Amr had prematurely declared victory on Saturday night.

5,835 members were eligible to vote in the Democrat's internal election. In addition to Hassan Latheef as President, two Deputy Presidents were chosen, with Hassan Firushan elected as the Youth Deputy President and Aishath Alaika Adnan as the Women Deputy President. Fathmath Hamdha was e elected as the President of the Women's Branch while Mohamed Maseeh was elected the President of the Youth Branch.
