Pres Dr. Muizzu labels actions against legitimate gov't as treason,

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described destabilizing a legitimate government as as act of treason. He made the remark during his address at the official function commemorating Huravee Day held on Saturday.

The President's statement comes in the wake of recent developments in the Parliament, where the Social Committee passed amendments to the provisions of the Parliament Rules outlining the removal process for the President and Vice-President. Meanwhile, an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP has also proposed reducing the total number of MPs in the Parliament to 80 following the departure of 7 MPs from the current 87-member parliament to join the new government. If the total number of MPs is officially set at 80, the MDP would have the capability to unilaterally remove the President and Vice-President from power.

Referring to the MDP, the President said making decisions that prioritize their power without considering the welfare of the country and its people was treasonous. He described those who plan and execute actions that harm the country as cowardly and spineless individuals.
