The establishment of the Maldives' Zakat House is a historic and joyous day in the history of the Islamic Ministry, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said.
The Zakat House was inaugurated at a special ceremony held at the Islamic Center today. The Zakat House, which was established to uphold the third pillar of Islam, will facilitate the distribution of the benefits of Zakat to its rightful beneficiaries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr. Shaheem thanked the President for incorporating the Zakat House into his presidential manifesto and fulfilling the pledge. He noted that this was the first time a presidential candidate's manifesto had included the mention of Zakat House, he said.
Minister Shaheem underscored that the primary objective behind establishing the Zakat House is to ensure that individuals receiving Zakat today can become contributors to Zakat in the coming years
The Zakat House will utilize funds from the Zakat Fund to invest in projects aligned with Islamic principles, provide a mechanism for accepting and disbursing Zakat, announce the Nisab for Zakat Al-Mal, or Zakat on Wealth, twice a year, and regularly update the national registry of individuals below the poverty line. Additionally, the agency aims to disseminate knowledge about Zakat in the Maldives, raising awareness among the public and state institutions.
The Zakat House will be established as a separate agency under the Islamic Ministry to strengthen the Zakat system. This initiative is part of the President's "Week 14" first 100 days goals.
