The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced plans to introduce a system that allows the Maldives Zakat House can receive charitable donations in addition to Zakat-al-Maal.

The ministry said the new system will be established next week. The initiative aims to challenge public donations towards essential causes across the Maldives, the ministry said. This includes funding for mosques, Quran classes and other religions and social welfare initiatives.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs said the Zakat House is being developed based on the model of Kuwait’s Zakat House, which is a leading zakat institution in the Islamic world.

The Zakat House of the Maldives was established on December 18, 2023. Last year, the institution carried out a project to provide water to Palestinians. In addition, the Zakat Fund helps individuals with serious illnesses with their medical costs.
