Male City Mayoral by-election underway

Voting is now in progress for the by-election to fill the vacant Male City mayoral position.

Alongside the mayoral race, elections are also being held for three councilor positions in the Male' City Council, and a by-election for a member of the M. Mulah Women's Development Committee.

Voting began at 8:00 am and was originally scheduled to continue until 4:00 pm. However, due to adverse weather conditions across Maldives, an additional one hour has been granted by the Elections Commission, extending the voting period to 5:00 pm.

A total of 54,680 people are eligible to vote in the mayoral by-election. Candidates have urged the public to participate in the vote despite the bad weather.

Male' City mayor position became vacant when the former Mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was elected President of the Maldives and assumed his role on November 17 last year.
