IMF welcomes Pres Dr.Muizzu's proposed economic reforms

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has welcomed the reforms proposed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu aimed at addressing the Maldives' current economic challenges.

A delegation from the IMF visited the Maldives earlier this year for discussions concerning the nation's economic situation and policies.

In a statement disclosing the delegation's findings, the IMF welcomed the proposed reforms and urged for their swift implementation.

The IMF noted that the Maldives' economy has strengthened since the COVID-19 pandemic and that the economy is expected to grow by 5.2 percent this year. However, increased fiscal and external fragility has called for an urgent change in policies, the statement said.

President Dr. Muizzu, speaking in Th. Dhiyamigili on Tuesday, emphasized that the government's efforts to improve the Maldives' economic situation are positively received by various international organizations. He disclosed meetings with both the IMF and the World Bank, stating that both entities expressed approval of the government's initiatives to bolster the economy, and pledged their support in assisting the Maldives in overcoming its current economic situation.
