Gov't to undertake reforms to increase healthcare accessibility

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the government is taking reform measures to increase the number of specialist doctors and thus reduce the waiting time for patients.

On today's episode of "The President's Answer" series, an initiative by the President's Office to directly address public queries on social media, the president was asked regarding the challenges in seeing a doctor in the Maldives.

Responding to the inquiry, the president said one of his most important policies was strengthening the health system. He said he is working to open jobs for specialists at main government hospitals, IGMH and Dharumavantha Hospital aiming to alleviate prolonged waiting times for patients.

“In addition, we have already started recruiting specialists from abroad for areas where there are currently no specialists in the Maldives,” he said.

President Dr. Muizzu further said the addition of specialist doctors and super-specialist doctors will reduce the waiting time for doctor appointments. Reforms are also underway to optimize the appointment system, ensuring that patients can anticipate their appointment dates well in advance, he said.

The President said he would work hard to improve the healthcare accessibility in the Male' area as well as in the islands where the tertiary hospitals are located.
