Ex-Speaker Shahid to run for MDP presidency

Former Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid has decided to vie for the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s presidency.

The post of MDP President became vacant following the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed on June 21 last year. Currently, the role is being temporarily held by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Shahid took to his social media platforms on Sunday to formally declare his intention to contest for the MDP presidency,

“With the help of God, I intend to contest for the post of MDP President,” Shahid said.

Shahid said it is clear that the MDP should come out with new enthusiasm and zeal, and work in unity to take the country back in the direction the people want.

“I would like to ask for your support and cooperation,” Shahid, who joined the MDP during the Nasheed regime, said.

From among the current MDP leadership, Shahid is one of the most experienced politicians. He has served in various capacities including Parliament Speaker, Member of Parliament, cabinet minister, and President of the UN General Assembly.

No other candidate has expressed interest in running for the post thus far.
