The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s President Abdulla Shahid has described President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government as young and inexperienced in diplomacy.
In a social media post on X, Shahid wrote regarding the President’s ongoing state visit to India. He said the current government is beginning to realize that international relations cannot be conducted based on lies and deceit.
Shahid expressed his pleasure with the revival of close relations with India and the continuation of several key projects started during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, including the introduction of Indian Rupay card in the Maldives, the inauguration of the new runway of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, continuation of MoUs strengthening the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and on Sports and Youth. He also highlighted the resumed talks on establishing an Indian Consulate in southernmost Addu City.
“It is also heartening that the Consulate of India to be opened in Addu City has received positive consideration by the government — despite their supposed objection while in the opposition,” he wrote.
Shahid also expressed his satisfaction that the government is in talks with India to enhance the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force in connection with the UTF project, a project which they objected to before coming into power.
Shahid thanked India for remaining steadfast with the Maldivian people. He also expressed the hope that the existing close relations between the two countries would continue to flourish in the future.
