ACC officials active at BAM regarding corruption allegations

An Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation team has entered the office of the Badminton Association of Maldives (BAM) office in connection with corruption allegations concerning BAM.

The ACC has confirmed that an investigative team from the commission is currently engaged at the association to obtain documents and information in relation to a number of corruption-related allegations involving BAM brought to the attention of ACC. No further details were shared.

The main corruption allegations against BAM officials include renting premises from private buildings owned by BAM officials to accommodate association employees, as well as the procurement of badminton shuttlecocks for BAM from the association's President Moosa Nashid's Askani Sports shop. Additional concerns include unnecessary expenditures due to budgetary shortcomings and inadequate record-keeping of sponsorships, income, and expenditure.

There are also issues of unnecessary expenditures citing lack of budget, and poor record keeping of assistance received from sponsors, income, and expenditure details.

The purchase of badminton shuttles for BAM use from Askani Sports Shop is a recurring complaint previously filed with the ACC. The commission at the time ruled that there was no corruption involved.

The investigation into BAM comes at a time when the association is disregarding directives from the Sports Commissioner.
