MDP warns of threats to freedom and rights if gov't remains unreined

Freedom in the Maldives and the people's rights will be compromised if the current government is not held accountable, the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has said.

At a campaign rally held at Fuvahmulah City on Wednesday, Fayyaz said the government should not be given a majority in parliament and stressed that MDP members must hold the government accountable.

“If we do not hold this government accountable, there will be no infrastructural development and we will soon lose our freedoms and rights-- there is no doubt about this,” he said.

Fayyaz said the government does not know how to run a country or to develop it. The government has no idea how to secure funds for projects and implement it, he added.

Referring to incidents that took place at Ghiyasuddin School during the Peoples' National Front (PNF)'s inaugural congress on Tuesday night, Fayyaz said the events showed that the current government was increasingly wielding power with no regard for the people.
