Gov't condemns threats to media by anonymous sources

The Maldivian government has strongly condemned threats against media outlets, particularly those originating from anonymous sources via social media and phone calls.

In an official statement, the President's Office assured all citizens and media personnel of the government's commitment to protecting the media and journalists. The necessary measures to address these threats effectively will be taken, the statement read.

According to the President's Office, the Maldives Police Service has initiated an investigation into the anonymous threats directed at journalists and media establishments. The police will utilize all available resources and capabilities to identify and apprehend those responsible for these threats.

The President's Office urged every Maldivian to report any instances of media intimidation and to prioritize national interests.

The President's Office assured that the government's longstanding policy remains to heed the voices of journalists, facilitate the media's operation, and encourage responsible dissemination of news and information. The administration remains committed to tirelessly safeguarding society's peace and harmony by thwarting any threats against the press, media, and the nation's integrity, the statement said.
