Maldives tourism sees decline in occupancy rate in March

The Maldives' tourism occupancy stood at 69.1 percent as of the end of March, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has said.

As of March, there were a total of 175 resorts, 843 guesthouses, 147 safari vessels, and 15 hotels operating in the Maldives. These establishments collectively offered 61,952 beds for tourists.

According to statistics released by MMA, the average occupancy rate was at 83.7 percent in February this year. This number fell to 69.1 percent in March.

Resort occupancy stood at 92.7 percent in February as against 76.2 percent in March. Similarly, guesthouse occupancy dropped from 71.4 percent to 58.4 percent over the same period. Hotels recorded a significant decrease as well, with occupancy falling from 39.1 percent in February to 28.7 percent in March. However, safari vessel occupancy saw a slight increase from 39.9 percent in February to 43.2 percent in March.

While occupancy rates fell in March, the number of tourists visiting the Maldives also saw a decline in March compared to the previous month. A total of 217,392 tourists visited the Maldives in February this year, compared to 194,227 in March.
