Man sentenced to life in prison for attempting to smuggle dimorphine into prison

A man has been sentenced to life in prison imprisonment for attempting to smuggle the drug, dimorphine, into a prison. The Criminal Court handed down the sentence to Mohamed Naseem, of Handhuvarege, K. Maafushi.

According to the chargesheet, police received a tip-off and searched Naseem at around 1:00 pm on February 26, 2019 while he was on a speedboat ready to depart to Maafushi from Male’. The drugs were found in Naseem's jeans pocket, with the packet containing 26.6629 grams of dimorphine.

The court ruled that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence obtained by the police to prove the charges raised against him in 2019. Judge Ismail Shafeeu sentenced Naseem to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of MVR 1 million.
