Security forces have concluded their terrorism and scam-related operation at K. Maafushi Prison.
The operation, which began Tuesday night, ended at 12:00 am on Thursday. The operation involved the Maldives National Defense Force, Maldives Police Service, and the Correctional Service.
The Correctional Service said the operation was launched following a tip-off that prohibited items were being smuggled into the prison and that acts leading to terrorism and scams were taking place at the prison. Authorities recovered phones, SIM cards, and substances believed to be drugs during the operation.
Scam calls have increased in the Maldives, with 998 cases reported to the police so far this year. According to Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed, scams have caused a loss of MVR 23 million.
