Police foil attempt to smuggle contraband into prison

An individual who attempted to smuggle in a large number of mobile phones and SIM cards into Maafushi Jail has been arrested. The individual was arrested in a special operation conducted jointly by Maldives Police Service, and Maldives Correctional Service on Monday.

Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said a man who attempted to smuggle in contraband into the Prison compound was intercepted and arrested on the shore of Maafushi. The items seized form the individual include 50 smart phones, 42 feature phones, 109 phone chargers, 77 USB cables, 65 headsets, 49 Dhiraagu SIM cards, 12 Ooredoo SIM cards, 2 packs of cutter blades, 10 Miswak and other items, he added.

Mobile phones and drugs are regularly smuggled into Maafushi Prison.
