The Maldives has decided to increase its annual contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which assists Palestinians in need.
The decision was announced at the UNRWA Pledging Conference held at the UN Headquarters on Friday, by the Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ali Naseer Mohamed.
Previously, the Maldives contributed $5,000 to UNRWA annually. The donation will now be increased tenfold to $50,000.
At the conference, Ali Naseer highlighted that a telethon held to raise funds for Palestine under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had raised over MVR 18.4 million and $49,800. The funds donated by the public for the telethon will be channeled to the Palestinian people through UNRWA, he said. The total contribution would exceed $1.2 million including the public donations and government contribution of $50,000, he noted.
The Maldives Zakat Fund has also raised $100,000 to help Palestine.
