Construction Minister criticizes insufficient budget allocations for projects

The 19th Parliament passed the budget for the current year without allocating sufficient funds for essential projects, Construction Minister Dr. Abdullah Muthalib said today. He made this remark in response to a question by a Parliament member at today’s Parliament session.

At the session, Minister Dr. Muthalib highlighted that although many projects were included in this year’s budget, adequate funds were not allocated in the budget.

"For example, in the budget, two or three million may be listed on the budget for a causeway that is currently underway. That is not the way the project to proceed," Muthalib said.

The minister also noted that some new projects had been budgeted at just MVR 100,000 or 200,000, which is not even enough to pay the advance payment required to mobilize the project. Dr. Muthalib emphasized that the current budget allocations make it challenging to effectively implement projects. Despite this, the government has identified priority projects and are implementing these projects as best as possible within the budget.

Dr. Muthalib urged parliament to ensure that the necessary funds are included when preparing the budget for each year.
