Minister reports halt in water and sewerage projects by FENAKA

Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib has said water and sewerage projects awarded to FENAKA Corporation have come to a complete halt.

Responding to a question by Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir at Monday’s Parliament sitting, Minister Dr. Muthalib said while water and sewerage projects are ongoing in over 80 islands, those contracted to FENAKA Corporation are at a complete stop. He noted that FENAKA was not traditionally a company that undertook such projects.

"FENAKA has not undertaken any water and sewerage contract work. However, in 2020, the company was awarded the such projects in 16 islands and repair work in three additional islands," he said.

The minister said FENAKA subcontracted the projects to other companies. However, due to the lack of progress, the contracts with FENAKA have now been canceled, he said.

“After terminating the agreements [with FENAKA], we have conducted a survey with the MWSC and obtained the prices for the works. The projects have been submitted to the tender board to award the contracts to MWSC,” Muthalib said.
