The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has reported a shortage of tuna products in its shops due to a significant decline in fishing activities.
According to MIFCO, the shortage is due to the current low fishing and the reduced number of fish being weighed during this period. While there is no limit on the supply of canned tuna, MIFCO stated that they can only produce other types of skipjack tuna only if they receive sufficient quantities.
According to recent statistics published by the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), fish companies weighed 31,873 metric tonnes of fish in the first five months of this year. This is a significant decline of 39 percent compared to the 52,657 metric tonnes weighed during the same period last year.
