The Maldives' fish exports have plunged by nearly 50 percent in the first six months of this year.
According to the Central Bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), fish exports declined by 47.6 percent in the first six months of this year compared to last year. Records show the Maldives exported 26,962 metric tonnes of fish in the first six months of this year, down 24,678 metric tonnes from the 51,640 metric tonnes exported during the same period last year.
Fish exports by month:
January: 4,475 metric tonnes
February: 6,051 metric tonnes
March: 3,787 metric tonnes
April: 4,746 metric tonnes
May: 4,404 metric tonnes
June: 3,495 metric tonnes
Among the various types of fish exports, skipjack tuna topped the list with 17,361 metric tonnes. The Maldives also exported 5,137 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 3,555 metric tonnes of canned and poached fish.
