Housing Ministry warns of actions over unpaid social housing rent

The Housing Ministry has issued a warning threatening to take action against individuals failing to pay rent for housing units allocated under the government's social housing scheme, as well as those illegally renting out these units.

In a statement released Sunday, the Housing Ministry noted that 20 percent of the rent for these social housing units in both the city and the atolls was pardoned by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu upon taking office, in line with his presidential pledge.

The ministry said despite this waiver, many residents continue to delay rent payments. The ministry had previously reminded those allocated housing units to pay their rent last January.

The ministry said it is now identifying those who are not paying rent, those who illegally sublet the units, and those who have made unauthorized alterations to the units.

"Action will be taken against those who are acting in violation of the rules," the ministry said in a statement
