The governments of Japan and the Maldives have signed an Exchange of Notes on the Disaster Resilience Enhancement in Male’ Island project.
The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer on behalf of the Maldives, and Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Mrs. Takeuchi Midori at a ceremony held at the Froeign Ministry today.
The Japanese government will provide 20 million Japanese yen (US$140,000) in grant assistance under its Economic and Social Development Program to support the project.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Zameer highlighted the project’s importance in mitigating the risks of rising sea levels and climate-related disasters. The project will provide sustainable security for future generations, he said.
Referring to the 2004 tsunami disaster, Minister Zameer acknowledged the crucial role played by the Male’ outer wall, built with Japanese assistance in 1990, in protecting Male’ residents during the 2004 tsunami disaster.
