Six companies express interest in Uligan Marina Project

Six companies have shown interest in the Uligan Marina Project to be implemented in Haa Alif Uligan. The update was shared by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, at the inauguration of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) gate in Uligan last night,

The Uligan Marina Project is aimed at ending the Maldivian economy's dependence on tourism alone. It is a key initiative in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s economic policy.

According to Wajeeh, all six applicants for the Uligan Marina project were foreign companies. He expressed confidence that the project will be handed over to one of the groups soon.

The Uligan Marina project is aimed at earning revenue by providing services to foreign cargo ships, safaris and yachts traveling through the northernmost part of the Maldives. The Maldives will become a “premier” destination for such vessels once the Uligan Marina project is fully implemented, MPL said. While the project is expected to create a large number of job opportunities, it will also bring about significant positive economic changes to the northern islands.

As per an announcement by MPL on August 1, the Uligan Marina project will consist of six main components. This includes a yacht marina, cruise terminal, vessel docking facility, Uligan port facility, city hotel and cafe and restaurant. The developer will be required to build the yacht marina, along with one or two other components.

The land for the development of the Uligan Yacht Marina was allocated to MPL by the island council on September 2.
