Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon has revealed plans to establish a satellite-based monitoring system for the surveillance of the Maldives’ maritime domain.
Speaking on a program aired by the state media, Minister Ghassan said a team of young professionals from the Maldives Space Research Organization was working with the ministry to establish the system. According to Ghassan, the team has strong connections with experts from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
“As part of this effort, we are aiming to establish a system that will be able to monitor our maritime domain or sea area in the near future through satellites,” Ghassan said.
The minister said the satellite-based sea area monitoring system would ensure peaceful navigation in the Maldivian waters. The system is expected to be operational in the near future.
