The cat shelter facility under construction in Hulhumale will be operational by November this year, Male’ City Council has said.
The Animal Welfare Ministry and Male’ City Council began the cat shelter project in March this year, to address the issue of stray cats overcrowding the streets and public areas of the city. The facility is being built on 5,000 sqft of land in Hulhumale’ Phase II. The final preparations for the shelter’s opening are currently underway.
A city council official told AVAS that the stray cats will be relocated to the new facility in November. The cats will first be temporarily housed elsewhere and observed before being moved to their permanent shelter, he said.
The facility will offer a safe and caring environment for cats, including healthcare services, a clinic and laboratory, and a quarantine area.
