The ruling Peoples' National Congress (PNC)'s Chairperson and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has stated that the party's main objective is to ensure President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is re-elected for a second term in office.
Speaking to reporters following PNC's internal election on Saturday, Abdul Raheem said the party's constitution states that if the incumbent President is a PNC member, he can be awarded the party's presidential ticket without a primary. He suggested that there would be no competition for the PNC presidential ticket for the next presidential election.
The Speaker expressed confidence that President Dr. Muizzu would contest the next presidential election with even more support than he received in the 2023 presidential election. The PNC's aim is to give President Dr. Muizzu the honor of being the first Maldivian president to be elected for two consecutive presidential terms, he said.
Abdul Raheem noted that PNC is gaining more success every day under the advice and guidance of President Dr. Muizzu. He foresaw even greater achievements for the party in the days ahead.
Abdul Raheem also made an appeal to rival political leaders and urged them not to resort to personal attacks when contesting the presidential election. He asserted that the PNC is committed to conducting themselves with civility.
Addressing speculation about his rapport with President Dr. Muizzu, Abdul Raheem affirmed that their relationship has grown stronger since President Dr. Muizzu’s election. He said the trust between the pair has also strengthened since the election.
