The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Senate has decided to dissolve the party. The decision was made at a Senate meeting held Sunday night.
The resolution passed with the majority of the PPM Senate, states that the party's assets and funds will be transferred to the State. A committee will be formed to oversee the dissolution process.
Founded in November 2011 by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, PPM reached its political peak in 2013 when Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom was elected Maldives President under the party's banner. However, following Yameen's defeat in the 2018 presidential election, the party's activities slowed down significantly. After significant internal conflict, President Yameen, who led the party in recent years, resigned from the party following the 2023 presidential election to form his own political party, the Peoples' National Front (PNF).
Several political figures have expressed different reactions to PPM's dissolution. While some believe it would bring a major shift to the Maldivian political landscape, others see it as a consequence of the party's internal politics.
The Political Parties Act has recently been amended to prohibit the use of a political party's color and symbol within five years of its dissolution.
