Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that India will not attempt to overthrow the Maldives’ government.

Nasheed made the statement on X in response to a report by Washington Post claiming that India’s intelligence agency RAW had plotted to overthrow Maldives’ President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government.

In his post, Nasheed said India will always respect the Maldives’ democracy. Referring to the Washington Post report, Nasheed said some are always involved in a ‘conspiracy’, and said he was not aware that India had attempted to destablisise the Maldivian government.

The Washington Post report alleged that India planned to bribe 40 members of the Parliament to pass a no-confidence vote against the president. It claimed to have obtained a report prepared by RAW agents titled ‘Democratic Renewal Initiative’.
