Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has stated that when dealing with corruption cases, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu focuses on the offense committed over the individuals involved.
Speaking on a state media program, Abdul Raheeem said the state lost significant amounts of funds to corruption in former governments. He noted that former governments had not undertaken adequate efforts to recover the funds. He emphasized the importance of thoroughly investigating cases against the country and the state, regardless of the position held by the perpetrators.
"Is he a cabinet minister of the previous government? Is he a head of the previous government? Is he a former president? Is he a vice-president? — none of this matter," he stated.
Abdul Raheem stated that the President’s approach on tackling corruption focuses on the act committed rather than the identity of the offender.
"President Dr. Muizzu's aim is not to find out commiitted the act. What did they do, was it done lawfully or unlawfully, illegally or legally? is it allowed under the Public Finance Act? How much damage did it cause the state? Who is responsible for the damage —it is only at this final stage that we are concerned about who committed the crime,” he explained.
Abdul Raheem reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combatting against corruption more effectively than previous administrations. He further noted that the President has promised to recover funds lost to corruption.
