A total of 226 individuals have been relocated due to the heavy rains experienced in Male’ City on Friday.
Male’ recorded 163mm of rain over the past 26 hours, including a record 60mm within an hour between 5:00 to 6:00 pm. While Male’ roads were flooded due to the rainfall, some households have also been significantly affected by the rain.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 226 individuals from 36 households were relocated to other areas due to flooding. NDMA provided food and temporary shelter for those affected.
NDMA said reports were received from 774 locations asking for assistance due to the rain. Of these, 554 requests were for sandbags to keep out flood waters. Rapid assessments were conducted on 53 households, according to NDMA.
Sandbagging efforts were undertaken as a collaborative effort by Male’ City Council, Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defence Force, the Local Government Ministry as well as Scouts.
