Will participate in UN led talks: MDP

  • MDP calls for serious approach for talks
  • All concerns must be discussed
  • Talks vital for national reconciliation, peace

Opposition MDP has stated that the Party will fully participate in the all-party talks, facilitated by the United Nations, "when the concerns of the opposition are met to establish a more conducive environment for dialogue."

A statement released by the Party said that the Party had firmly supported the need to engage in political dialogue to solve the political crisis facing the nation. The Party said the discussions will have to be a platform for all parties to express their concerns, find a solution to the said concerns and the political situation of the country.

Senior Advisor to the UN Department of Political Affairs, Tamrat Samuel had also meet with MDP. MDP had said that the party had briefed the Advisor on the conditions the Party had on taking part in the talks.

"MDP is concerned over delay to commence sincere talks and hopes for robust UN engagement that would result in the ‘clear measurable progress’ as recommended by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group," the statement said.

MDP said discussions should address confidence-building measures relating to reform of the judiciary, strengthening independent institutions, religious radicalization, deterioration of human rights, foster political pluralism and press freedom, good governance and endemic corruption within the state.

Following discussions with Samuel, the Government had passed to include opposition leaders Mohamed Nasheed and AP Chief Imran Abdullah in the discussions. The discussions are scheduled to begin soon and UN Senior Advisor will be taking part in the discussions.

The statement released by the President's Office quoted President Yameen, stating that the Senior Advisor's work was successful. The statement thanked the Advisor, further saying that measurable success had been made in the discussions.
