Germans paid to consume electricity due to excessive production of Renewable energy

On Sunday, the 8th of May, Germany had produced so much of renewable of energy, consumers were being paid to use electricity. Due to a sunny and windy day, Germany's solar, hydro, wind and biomass were supplying excess amounts of renewable energy.

Due to excessive production, the power prices were negative for several hours. When the power prices went negative, commercial users were being paid to consume electricity.

Even though Germany's production of renewable energy is a great contribution to sustainable development, there were some quirks that the Germans had not perfected. The power system is not flexible and it is rather rigid.

As the power system is inflexible, gas power plants and nuclear and coal plants kept on running while renewable energy was being produced in excess. The gas, coal and nuclear power plants could not be immediately shut down, and they had to pay to sell power to the grid. Industrial consumers gained huge benefits as they earned by consuming electricity.

Germany plans to hit 100% renewable energy by 2050. However critics have been slamming this idea due to the inconsistencies of producing renewable energy.
