Head of Taliban in Afghanistan likely killed in drone strike

Mullah Akhtar Mansour, the head of the Taliban in Afghanistan is 'likely dead' after a US drone strike on Saturday.

The US military carried out an airstrike on Saturday which was sanctioned by President Barack Obama. The airstrike was reportedly targeting Mullah Akhtar Mansour in remote areas, and the US took no chances as they used multiple drones to attack the Taliban leader. Pentagon is still assessing the results of the airstrike to determine if he was killed.

Senior officials have told CNN that it might take days to confirm that the air strike had killed the Taliban leader. The official who chose to remain anonymous revealed that for now, the Pentagon believed that Mullah Akhtar Mansour and another male was killed in the air strike. There were no recorded reports of collateral damage from the air strike.

Claims of Mansour's death were denied by a Taliban commander close to the man, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. This isn't the first time Mansour has been attacked: In December, he was reported wounded and maybe killed in a shootout at the house of another Taliban leader near Quetta in Pakistan.
