Gdh.Thinadhoo Magistrate who was arrested while he was allegedly intoxicated has been suspended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). He was suspended today at a meeting held by the JSC.
JSC has said that the commission has asked the magistrate to step away from his duties and responsibilities for the moment, and furthermore to not attend to his official duties until a final verdict has been decided regarding his case.
The 38 year old Magistrate, Ibrahim Rasheed was let off by the high court at his remand hearing. The high court ruled that Ibrahim Rasheed should be let off as he is a magistrate and because the police had not acted within the law while arresting him.
Police have said that Ibrahim Rasheed was arrested because the police had reason to suspect he was intoxicated. The police also said that they had found a rubber packet containing what they believed to be drugs lying near him while they searched his body.
The judicial law states that a magistrate or a judge can only be arrested if a warrant was issued from a higher court.
